Tapping ADI Cast Iron (Austempered Ductile Iron)
Low-cost production, good application field, excellent weight-to-properties ratio, optimal castability, fair vibration damping and easily recyclable are just some of the benefits why ADI CAST IRON (Austempered Ductile Iron) is gradually replacing light, composite and plastic metal alloys in the automotive and engineering sector.
In 2009, the project ADITAPS at Italian tap specialist UFS officially took off from this ground towards enhanced production output and efficient fabrication techniques for this material.
THE CONTROL TAP USED IN THE RESEACH WAS UFS MODEL: K26M8FOR-TX
• Powder sintered using high cobalt and vanadium content
• Special tempering for increased abrasion resistance at overall, same optimal toughness
• Straight cuts which grant the tools increased stiffness and stability
• Low cutting angle and very smooth running
• Controlled surface treatment
• Internal refrigerant flow to ease the removal of chips and shaving and decrease the temperature gradient
THE RESEARCH METHOD:
Boring and threading trials have been carried out with a “control-tool” in collaboration with the Universities of Aachen and Bilbao to establish the initial “tool performance." This was immediately followed by the design of various tool geometries, coating and priming types, whereas each new design was sent to the external labs of the foregoing universities for testing. Extended trials were performed for different diameters up to the definition of the present ADITAP.
ADITAP taps have a proven record of up to 600% more performance as opposed to the control-tool! An excellent result that exceeds the expectations of all partners for such an important material with a very interesting industrial application forecast.
