Cutwel is not normally one of the first names that comes to mind when thinking of sliding head tooling and solutions, but with the newly acquired agencies from German manufacturers Simtek, Quick and WTO alongside their existing partners Karnasch and Korloy, Cutwel now have possibly the largest dedicated tooling range for sliding head lathes in the UK.
The product range is made up from both standard off the shelf cutting tools, sliding head specific toolholders and special tooling solutions such as thread whirling and grooving tools.
The most recent addition to Cutwel’s range is the WTO Quick Change thread whirling system for Star, Citizen and Doosan sliding heads, which is typically used in manufacturing bone screws. Cutwel supply the complete turnkey package including the thread whirling heads along with a range of standard and special form inserts. This complements the WTO driven tooling ranges for Star, Tsugami, Goodway and Tornos lathes and gear hobbing systems.
When it comes to grooving, threading and precision turning, Cutwel’s line up of Simtek and Korloy indexable tools are available for machining from 0.3mm OD to micro tolerances. As well as offering a huge range of standard ground tolerance tools, Simtek also specialise in the production of special inserts and holders. These special tools can be quoted within 8 working hours, even for the most complex of tools. Korloy produce a wide range of ISO tools in a G class tolerance for applications where the best finish is required.
One of Cutwel’s biggest selling sliding head products is the Knurling system, made by QUICK in Germany. Available from 8mm shanks with diameters from 1.5mm, Quick produce one of the world’s most specialised cut knurling systems for sliding head lathes. The CUT KNURLING heads are adjustable and reversible meaning they can be used for a variety of knurl styles and as cut knurling is very kind to the machine, it is far more suited to the sliding head market than pressure knurling. All QUICK wheels are made from powder metal and ground, giving the finest quality knurls.
Broaching tools from Simtek are new to the Cutwel range and are available in a many different forms and sizes including keyways, chamfers and hexagons and with the use of a simple macro, keyways can be produced at speed on any sliding head. Special forms can also be produced for machining splines, gears and torx.
The range is completed by German round shank specialist Karnasch with their high precision micro drills, end mills, reamers and thread mills. Drills and milling cutters have diameters from 0.02mm and tolerances as small as 1 micron, the Karnasch micro machining range is one of the largest and most accurate available.
