Measuring Tool Stands

What types of measuring tool stand are available?

The term measuring tool stands can cover a broad range of different metrology components. Stands can be used with dial indicators, digital indicators, dial test indicators, digital micrometers, vernier micrometers and dial micrometers. Depending on the application and measuring tool to be clamped, different sizes and styles of measuring tool stand are available.

For indicators (standard and dial test), a typical stand will consist of two metal bars connected by an adjustable clamp, which allows the user to move the positions of both bars to the desired location for measuring or inspection. Connected to the stand would commonly be a magnetic base, which can be switched on and off by flipping a switch. A magnet allows you to mount the stand to multiple magnetic surfaces, including the side of a manual machine or CNC machine. With magnetic forces up to 100kgf, these stands can withstand significant forces acting against it. Alternatively, for non-magnetic surfaces (like glass, plastic or wood), vacuum bases are available which use suction to apply force.

Of course, there are variations in the type of indicator stands that are available. Different stands feature varying levels of adjustability. Certain stand types allow the user to manoeuvrer the stand up, down and pivot around the base. Flexible arm models allow the stand to be positioned however the user chooses. In models that feature pivoting, a ball and swivel joint is utilised which can then be tightened back up when the desired position has been found.

Another determining factor for the user when choosing an indicator stand is how the indicator is mounted on the stand. Typically, an indicator will either feature a dovetail or lug back on the rear of the indicator model. If an indicator features a dovetail, the user would need a stand with a dovetail clamp (typically this will be either 4mm or 8mm wide). Lug backed models will require a different connection type to attach it to a stand and are commonly used where extra reach is required (for instance deep hole measurements or indicating).

Furthermore, specific stands are available for certain applications. For instance, stands are available with granite surface plates attached to the base. What this allows is for components to be perfectly laid flat ready for inspection. However, typically the metrology stand and granite surface plate would be purchased separately.

So far, only indicator stands have been considered. Micrometer stands are also available for precision measurement operations. Typically, these consist of a tightening wheel atop a clamp containing rubber for added grip. The user would insert the micrometer into this clamp and use the tightening nob to secure the unit. Different stands are available with different types of micrometer, with specific models available for inside micrometers, three point micrometers and micrometers smaller than 100mm.

What are the benefits to using a measuring tool stand?

For precise measuring and inspection work, measuring tool stands provide a vital benefit over handheld use. When holding measuring tools, the body heat generated can cause measurements taken to be slightly different from actual values, due to the expansion of the measuring instruments.

Using a stand also frees up both hands for fine measurement and adjustment. For instance one hand can be used to grip the component whilst the other for adjusting the tool to the exact adjustment. What this does is make it easy for machinists or inspection staff to finely adjust their metrology tools without the added pressure of holding both the tool and component in their hands.
