The Cutwel quick change tap adapters are available in both rigid or tension and compression systems. They offer quick and easy tool change, excellent reliability and excellent thread quality.

Quick change tap chucks are even recommended for rigid tapping, especially in more difficult applications or materials where taps or threads are prone to failure.

Clutch drive adapters and holders with length compensation can increase tool life and prevent thread failure.

Quick Change Tap Chucks For High Performance Tapping

Tension & Compression Quick Change Tap Chuck
Application

The tension and compression tap chuck is most commonly used for tapping on CNC or conventional machine tools without rigid tapping. The axial length compensation prevents oversized threads and helps prevent tap breakage from over travel, for example when the tap hits the bottom of the hole. Tension and compression tap chucks are also ideal for high-end tapping applications in modern CNC machine tools, where the workpiece is of high value, or difficult materials that require high torque loads. The chucks offer extra safety mechanisms compared to other chucks, such as Synchro chucks, which make issues such as taps slipping impossible.

Application

The rigid quick change tap chuck is designed for everyday tapping on machine tools with rigid tapping capabilities. The adapters offer safety mechanisms such as square drives to prevent tap slipping and tenon drives to prevent adapters slipping in the chuck. Rigid tap chucks do not offer any length compensation. This can cause problems if the machine tool has any synchronisation errors and can cause tap failure, oversized threads and premature tap wear. Tap tool life and thread quality can be improved using Synchro Tap chucks or quick change tension

and compression chucks.

Clutch Drive Quick Change Tap Adapter

Application

Clutch drive tap adapters feature torque control. They are ideal for use in small diameter taps where tap breakage is common, or in tapping materials which require high torque. The clutch helps prevent tap breakage and warns of tap wear and compression chucks.

Application

Fixed drive tap adapters are recommended for everyday tapping applications. The adapters feature a square drive for the tap shank to prevent the tap from slipping and the adapters are driven in the tap chuck by tenons which also ensures the adapter cannot slip.

Application

Most modern CNC machine tools are equipped with rigid tapping functionality and it is common to see machine tapping carried out with standard ER collet chucks. This can result in high machine loads during the inversion cycle, oversized threads and poor tap life, as standard ER collet chucks do not offer any protection against errors in the tapping synchronisation cycle. It is recommended to use a Synchro ER tap chuck for everyday tapping applications, high speed tapping or high production tapping.

In long reach applications where a Synchro tap chuck is not suitable, ER collets with length compensation (tension type) can prevent tap and thread failure in difficult applications.

 

ER Collet Chuck - MD Type (With Square Drive)

ER collets with square drives are essential for ANY rigid tapping application using ER collet chucks or Synchro tap chucks. The collets are manufactured with a square drive specific diameter to suit standard tap dimensions. The square drive prevents the tap from slipping in the collet.

Square drive collets do not offers any protection against synchronisation error in the tapping cycle and can still slip in the chuck under high torque loads. For high end workpieces, small taps or material which result in high torque loads, tension and compression quick change tap chucks with clutch drive adapters may offer better performance and thread quality.

 

ER Collet Chuck - Tension Type (With Square Drive)

ER collets with tension & square drives are an ideal solution where Synchro tap chucks are not suitable, such as long reach collet chucks, angle heads and driven tools. The collets are manufactured with a square drive specific diameter to suit standard tap dimensions. The square drive prevents the tap from slipping in the collet & the spring loaded tension of the collet offers protection against synchronisation error in the tapping cycle.

 

ER Collet Chuck - Tension Type (With Square Drive)

Application

The most common tap or thread failures in CNC rigid tapping result from the use of standard ER collets. The collets do not offer any protection against taps slipping, and the nature of the spring collet means lower clamping forces on the tap shank. Standard ER collets should only be used for low value, low volume applications and should be used with caution.

 

Application

Synchro Tap Holders are the best way to dramatically increase tool life in a rigid tapping environment. They are a must for any CNC machining centre or lathe with rigid tapping. The minimal tension and compression length compensation, (<1mm) compensates small synchronisation and location anomalies and dampens excessive forces acting on the tap. This allows the tap to cut more efficiently, decreasing torque loads and increasing production. Testing shows an increase in tool life up to 4x.

Synchro tap chucks are ideal for every day tapping, high speed tapping and high production tapping. For high end workpieces, small taps or material which result in high torque loads, tension and compression quick change tap chucks with clutch drive adapters may offer better performance and thread quality.
